Vienna

" The old imperial residence city, now a modern art center, remains a city for connoisseurs - whether you want to enjoy immortal waltzes, the exciting tension between imperial and modern architecture, a relaxed shopping trip or simply the sweet life between coffeehouses and Heurigen, trendy bars and sausage vendors, discos and beisels ... Location and Travelling

Vienna can be easily reached by train within Europe and by plane from all major capitals. For getting around in Vienna, the Wiener Linien offer fast and efficient connections. Renting a car is another option but be aware of limited parking space in the city center.

Impressions

The center of Vienna is the Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral), the large polychrome-roofed church that is as much of a landmark for Vienna. From there, the Kärntnerstraße, Vienna's most elegant shopping and walking street, runs down to the Ring, the road that encircles the old inner city, and then follows the line of the old Roman walls that defended the city against the barbarians on the other side of the Danube.

Culture

In case your interest is - besides computer science - also in music, then Vienna is the right place to be. You might like to visit to the houses of famous Viennese musicians: Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Johann Strauss, Richard Strauss, Beethoven, Lehar, Gluck, and Brahms lived in Vienna. An incredible feast of musical venues like the "Musikverein", the "Konzerthaus", the "Volksoper", the "Theater an der Wien", the "Kammeroper" offer a vast range of options, from symphony to operettas to opera and to modern musicals.

Weather and Climate

Vienna's climate runs from warm, sometimes humid summers to cold winters that blanket the city in snow (and sometimes bring a particularly biting, gusty wind). Even in the summer, you may want to take along a raincoat and a warm sweater. If you're traveling into the countryside, especially, you'll want to have a warm sweater with you as evenings may become cool.
